Changdeok Palace, Seoul in 1999

A beautiful postcard someone gave to me.
Even though it’s a good guess to say this is a bar because of the neon lights, I can read that the characters in the middle say ‘maek ju’, which is ‘beer’. I love to be able to read their language.
Waiting to go into the palace grounds. I bought Robert a small, cold can of Korean coffee.
Just inside the entrance. I had our money and passports under my shirt in a money-belt so my stomach looks bigger than it was. It was hotter there than in Canada for October.
The king’s throne was in here.
Markers for where certain servants would stand.
It was beautiful. I like this picture because of the old Korean man with his hands behind his back on the right. See his funny pants and shoes? The man behind him was a Canadian we spent time with after.
This and the next few pictures are of the ‘secret garden’, where the pond is.
The is so bright in Korea that pictures look faded sometimes.
More at Changdeokkung Palace.
This was nice at the palace.
This Korean man could understand what was said about this building during the tour, and he’s looking at his pamphlet.
Buildings at UnHyeongGung. We came upon it unexpectedly.
Here are some of these children who were dressed up at UnHyeongGung. Merv is on the left.
The group of school children, or kindergarten, at UnHyeongGung that day.
Looking out of the window where we bought some stamps….
SoJoung brought us to the Wedding Hall she designed gowns for. Robert is missing the black belt that is part of his costume.
This is across from the Koex Building in Samsung-dong. You can’t recognize the area now, except that the ‘clock’ building is still there in 2019.
We went to Olympic Park and this time the grass was still green. I used to love going over the bridge and continuing up over the hill. It was an exciting view to me.

I studied Korean also through children’s books and classes at Chongju University and a private school in Seoul. I still understand the letters. One year while teaching elementary at at title 1 school, I hung up the Korean poster chart. This didn’t make me too popular with the principal as most of the children were Spanish or African American. I just thought “wouldn’t it be cool and some of the kids agreed!” Love the picture of you and your husband.

I don’t know if you thought like I did – I would get them to help me with my Korean sometimes and I thought it was at least communicating, with them speaking to me in English, so they were still practicing their English. But most didn’t want to help with Korean and only wanted to practice English without anything to do with Korean. I think that’s why the principal frowned at that poster….because it wasn’t English.
With regards to the picture if my husband and me, I can’t believe we have dark hair and not grey hair!!!

Oh, this was just a choice for them during their play time corners. Harmless.

This was in the states in a very rough and poor area where the families move often but you are right, they did need to practice writing in English. In Korea, I experienced the same, it is hard to be a teacher. Not everyone can do it.

Do you have any Korean friends in your part of Canada? We have lots of Korean stores and last summer, I tutored a man who was from Burma working in real estate. My husband ending up helping us also as he needed more knowledge of business and real estate terms than an English teacher knew. He needed a former realtor/businessman.

We have some Koreans here in the last few years only. I am always thrilled to speak to any. Was that man Burmese? Wow. I love the countries over in that region, or I love learning about them at least. I would have loved to go to Llasa the most.
